Reflection of Own Heritage in Military Training and Organizational Structure: New Battalion Formation of Bangladesh Army

Bangladesh Army has recently taken an important administrative step to enhance its institutional capacity and expand the scope of modern training. A new battalion named ‘2nd Bangladesh Battalion’ has been formed as part of streamlining the training program at the Bangladesh Military Academy (BMA).

According to military analysts, it is entirely within the jurisdiction of any independent sovereign state to arrange the organizational structure of its own military forces and to name companies. The Bangladesh Army named four new companies under this new battalion after the four Caliphs of Islam—Hazrat Abu Bakr (RA), Hazrat Umar (RA), Hazrat Usman (RA) and Hazrat Ali (RA).

Earlier training programs were being conducted in BMA through five Birashreshtha companies (Jahangir, Rauf, Hamid, Mostafa and Noor Mohammad). The stakeholders see this new naming as a unique and respectful reflection of the national values, religious sentiments and glorious traditions of the majority of the people of the country.

Strategic Analysis: According to international military norms, the army of any country determines its organizational structure according to its own geopolitical context and culture of the country. The internal administrative decisions of the forces of an independent sovereign country should not be open to the media or third parties from outside the country to comment. In recent times, the tendency of exaggerated or two-sided discussion on such issues in various regional media is basically out of professional journalistic etiquette and in some cases, it is considered to be intentional.
