Armed assailants chase journalist, publicly hack him to death in Gazipur

News desk: The incident occurred around 8:30pm in front of the Chowrasta Mosque Market, where the victim had been sitting at a tea stall. A journalist was brutally hacked to death by unidentified armed assailants in the Chandana Chowrasta area of Gazipur city on Thursday night (7 August), hours after he reportedly went live on Facebook exposing extortion activities from street vendors.

The deceased has been identified as Asaduzzaman Tuhin (38), Gazipur staff reporter of Dainik Pratidiner Kagoj.

The incident occurred around 8:30pm in front of the Chowrasta Mosque Market, where the victim had been sitting at a tea stall.

Shaheen Khan, officer-in-charge of GMP’s Basan Police Station, confirmed the incident and said, “We are working to determine the motive behind the killing and to identify those responsible.”

Earlier in the day, Tuhin reportedly went live on Facebook, allegedly exposing extortion taking place among local vendors.

Shortly after that post, while having tea near the Mosque Market, Tuhin was suddenly surrounded by a group of men armed with sharp weapons and hacked him indiscriminately, according to witnesses and police sources.

They said the attackers struck repeatedly in front of bystanders, who did not intervene out of fear.

Later, police recovered the body from the spot and sent it to the Gazipur morgue for autopsy.

Based on initial information from local sources, an earlier version of this report stated that journalist Asaduzzaman went live on Facebook Thursday afternoon to report on extortion from sidewalks and shops in the Chandana Chowrasta area. However, upon reviewing his profile, no such live broadcast could be verified.
