DHAKA: BNP has welcomed Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus’s announcement of holding the 13th Parliamentary Election in the first half of February.

“Through this, those who thought there were uncertainties over holding elections in Bangladesh — those are now gone,” said BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed while briefing journalists in Gulshan at 9:00pm.

“Today, the honourable chief adviser made two important announcements. One is the July Declaration, and the other is the announcement of the elections through his address to the nation. We welcome both,” he added.

He further said, “The chief adviser’s directive to ensure an environment where people can exercise their voting rights in the upcoming election is certainly acceptable.”

Salahuddin said, “He [Yunus] has announced that he will send a letter to the Election Commission. The Election Commission will take proper steps to hold the election before Ramadan begins, in the first half of February 2026. Of course, the Election Commission will announce the schedule on time.”

“The instructions given by the chief adviser today, and the letter he said he will send to the Election Commission — we, and the entire nation, were waiting for these initiatives,” he said.

Salahuddin said the entire country will now move towards an election-friendly environment, and an “election atmosphere” will be created.

“We hope the upcoming elections will be free and fair, and one of the most praised elections in the world. And we also call on the whole nation and its people to prepare for this.”

Asked if today’s announcement ended the political crisis, he hoped that political stability will return. “We hope everything functions more smoothly from here on.”
