Dhaka: Four murder cases were filed Wednesday against over 230 people including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her younger sister Sheikh Rehana, her daughter Saima Wazed Putul and her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.

Hasina’s senior cabinet colleagues Obaidul Quader and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal were also accused in the cases.

In the potentially most pivotal case filed Wednesday, Sheikh Hasina and 26 others were alleged for ordering the killing of 14-year-old Ashikul Islam during the student-led govt job quota reform movement on 19 July.

The victim’s mother Arisha Afruz filed the case over the killing in the capital’s Banasree area.

Tofazzal Hossain, additional chief metropolitan magistrate of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s (CMM) court, recorded the plaintiff’s statement and ordered Khilgaon police station to register it as a lawsuit.

In another incident in the same area, grocery shop owner Mizanur Rahman was shot and killed.

The case was filed following a complaint lodged by the victim’s father Kamal Hossain with the Khilgaon police station against Sheikh Hasina, her sister Sheikh Rehana, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, her daughter Saima Wazed Putul, and 31 others.

According to the statement, on 19 July, around 3pm, during the anti-discrimination student movement in Banasree, Mizanur Rahman was shot in the leg. He was later taken to the Pangu Hospital but died at around 5:40pm due to excessive bleeding.

Another complaint was directed to be accepted as a formal charge by Senior Judicial Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman at Ashulia police station.

Sheikh Hasina was made the main accused in the case over the death of City University student Md Sajjad Hossain Sajal in Ashulia during the student-led movement to topple Awami League government on 5 August.

Sajal’s elder brother Mijanur Rahman filed a case with Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Mostafizur Rahman’s court.

Other accused in the case were- former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, former Awami League lawmaker Saiful Islam, former Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former DB chief Harun Or Rashid, former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman and former DMP joint commissioner Biplab Kumar Sarker.

According to the case statement, hundreds of students brought out a procession in Baipail area on 5 August in support of anti-discrimination student movement. Police with the aim to control the movement, fired on the procession and detained many students.

Sajal, BSc (Textile) second semester student of City University, was detained from the procession and subsequently was shot dead inside the police station.

Later, police put Sajal’s body alongside the bodies of some other students inside a human-hauler and set it on fire by pouring petrol on it, reads the case statement.

In the fourth case, Hasina has been accused along with Obaidul Quader, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, AKM Mojammel Haque and 151 others for the killing of Nazrul Islam, 32, with firearms.

The victim’s wife Purnima Begum claimed Nazrul was killed in Gazipur’s Chandna area after he joined a peaceful student-led demonstration calling for the reformation of disproportionate quota system in government jobs, and justice for the killings of students in previous days’ killings during the movement.

Awami League activists, working on orders from the accused, launched surprise attacks on the student-people protesters with local weapons and firearms. Many students sustained injuries from sharp local weapons and Nazrul received gunshot wounds in his shoulder, leaving him dead on the spot, the plaintiff claimed.

Basan Police Station has confirmed filing of the case.
