Dhaka: Chief Adviser’s office slams DMP chief’s suggestion to not use the word ‘rape’ in media reports.

The Chief Adviser’s Office today strongly condemned the remarks made by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali regarding the avoidance of the term “rape.”

“Rape is rape, whether committed against an 8-year-old or an 80-year-old. Such a heinous crime must be called by its rightful name,” said a statement issued by CA press wing.

The interim government will not tolerate any form of violence against any citizen of Bangladesh, added the statement.

Yesterday, the DMP chief at an event organised by the Broadcast Journalist Centre (BJC) in the capital said, “I strongly dislike the word ‘rape’. I request you not to use it. Instead, use ‘violence against women’ or ‘repression of women’. Even the law is called the ‘Women and Children Repression [Prevention] Act’. Let’s avoid words that sound unpleasant.”

The DMP commissioner, while replying to a query, also urged the media to minimise the coverage of such incidents, saying excessive reporting may create panic or fear among the public.
